GENEVA - Switzerland defender Patrick Mueller is training with struggling hometown club Servette as he seeks to stay in shape and find a team in one of Europe's top football leagues.
The 31-year-old Mueller was released by French champion Lyon in May after knee injuries kept him out of first-team action for the entire season.
But he defied medical expectations to return in time for the European Championship in June and played every minute of co-host Switzerland's three matches to reach 81 international selections.
Now Mueller must prove his fitness to clubs that might be tempted to offer him a contract.
French side Paris Saint-German and Swiss club FC Zurich have shown interest but Mueller is reportedly hoping to get an offer from countries like England and Germany.
Geneva-born Mueller started his career at Servette but has ruled out returning to the second division club. which last weekend drew just 1,346 fans to the 30,000 capacity Stade de Geneve - a Euro 2008 venue - for its 2-1 loss to Schaffhausen.
Servette, one of Switzerland's most storied franchises, has not played in the top flight since being relegated two divisions amid bankruptcy in 2005.
"I have always had in mind to come back to Geneva," Mueller was quoted as saying Tuesday by daily Tribune de Geneve. "For now, I still want to see if I can develop abroad. It's my priority."
