Swiss vote to keep army-issued weapons at home: results
A majority of cantons have voted in favour of holding fast to Switzerland's long-standing tradition of letting citizens keep army-issued weapons at home, results showed Sunday.
With the vote, the country widely rejected an initiative brought by a coalition of non-governmental groups, religious authorities and centre-left parties which sought to have weapons kept in armouries instead.
Less than two hours after polls closed, 18 out of 26 cantons had already returned final results, with 14 firmly rejecting of the initiative.
For any initiative to pass, the twin support of a majority of citizens and of cantons is required.
