Switzerland voted Sunday to hold fast to its long-standing tradition of letting citizens keep army-issue weapons at home, exit polls indicated.

The country rejected an initiative brought by a coalition of non-governmental groups, religious authorities and centre-left parties which sought to have weapons kept in armouries instead, the gfs.bern polls showed.

Four out of 26 cantons had already returned final results within 40 minutes of the polls closing, confirming rejection of the initiative.
