Zurich -- Switzerland's unemployment rate climbed to 3.6 percent in June, reaching its highest level since March 2006, official figures showed Wednesday.

The total number of jobless people reached 140,253, up 5,125 from May, the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs said in a statement.

Switzerland expects its unemployment rate to reach 3.8 percent in 2009 due to the economic crisis, sharply up from 2.6 percent in 2008.

To deal with the tough economic climate, Bern in June approved a third stimulus package which includes measures to manage growing unemployment.
