Swiss move to confiscate frozen Duvalier millions
The Swiss government will file to confiscate Haiti ex-dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier's frozen Swiss millions under new legislation, the foreign ministry said Wednesday.
The foreign ministry had announced the first stage of the process, a one year block on some 5.7 million dollars, when the new law easing the restitution of stolen assets to home countries came into force on Tuesday.
"The Federal Council (government) decided today to charge the Federal finance ministry to file for confiscation of the Duvalier funds blocked in Switzerland," the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
The legal action will take place in Switzerland's highest administrative court, after a 25 year legal battle over the money held in a Swiss bank.
