Cantonal judge Pierre Boinay resigns after being accused of viewing internet porn at work.

GENEVA - A Swiss judge resigned Wednesday after becoming involved in an Internet porn viewing scandal involving some 30 civil servants that challenged the capacity of a local government computer network, local media said.

Regional authorities in canton Jura revealed in a statement earlier in March that their computer network became "saturated" due to widespread viewing of "non-professional sites", including pornography, in the workplace.

The affair, dubbed "porngate" by local media, claimed its latest victim on Wednesday when cantonal tribunal judge Pierre Boinay announced his resignation, the Swiss news agency ATS reported.

Boinay explained in his resignation letter that he was resigning to avoid damaging the reputation of the judiciary.

But he emphasised that the viewing of the sites was not a criminal offence.

ATS reported that Jura's public prosecutor Yves Maitre also resigned last Friday, shortly before regional authorities announced that they opened disciplinary inquiries against some 30 staff and seized computer hard disks.

The computer system was modified in February to prevent employees from accessing certain sites.
