Swiss film fest begins with manga

The 62nd Locarno international film festival opened Wednesday with a screening of Japanese cartoons.

Geneva -- The 62nd Locarno international film festival opened Wednesday with Japanese cartoons in the spotlight among the 390 feature films and shorts to be presented over the next 10 days.

Such prominent anime directors as Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and Ichiro Itano were expected to attend the Manga Impact section of the festival, where 18 features are in competition for the Golden Leopard award for best picture.

Some 180,000 movie fans turned out for the 2008 festival.
