Swiss elected next UN General Assembly head
Joseph Deiss, a former Swiss president and foreign minister, was Friday elected president of the next UN General Assembly.
Deiss, who was elected by acclamation, is to take up his post in September, succeeding Ali Triki, a former Libyan foreign minister.
The 192-member Assembly elects a president annually, and the post rotates among the five geographic groups.
Deiss had been picked as the candidate of the assembly's Western European and Others group, which is in line to assume the presidency.
He was president of his country in 2002 when it joined the United Nations.
