Swiss driver loses bid to lower funeral fee

Switzerland's federal court says a driver who killed an elderly woman must pay her full funeral charges.

GENEVA - Switzerland's federal court ruled Wednesday that a motorist who killed an 89-year-old woman had no right to a reduced charge for her funeral on the grounds that she would have died soon anyway.

It reversed a decision by a lower court in Fribourg that reduced the bill for the motorist because actuarial statistics showed that the woman's family would have to pay for her funeral within six years if she died of natural causes.

In its ruling published Wednesday, the federal court said Fribourg judges based their decision on incomplete information that would distress the victim’s family.
