Geneva -- A group of angry Swiss farmers protesting against milk prices threw their boots at Economy Minister Doris Leuthard on Friday as she opened an international cheese competition.

Leuthard's bodyguards opened their umbrellas to protect her as several dozen farmers threw their boots during the minister's opening speech to the 6th Mountain Cheese Olympics, the Swiss news agency ATS reported.

Uniterre, one of the Switzerland's farmer's unions, said the action in the northern town of Saignelegier was in protest of the government's support plan for the country's dairy industry.

Dairy farmers around Europe have demonstrated in recent weeks against falling prices that they say threaten their livelihoods.
