Swiss police uncover an internet paedophile ring spanning over 70 countries, leading to dozens of arrests.

Geneva -- Swiss police gave details Sunday of how they uncovered a massive internet paedophile ring, taking apart a network in scores of countries.

Police in the southwest canton of Vaud uncovered a network of some 2,300 IP addresses (a computer's internet identification) from computers which contained images of child pornography, said a spokesman.

The owners of the computers were located in 78 countries, police told Swiss papers Matin Dimanche and the Sonntagszeitung.

Their work led to the arrest of dozens of people, mainly in Poland and the United States, with some suspects already convicted.

"It is the biggest ring of this type ever broken up in Switzerland," Vaud police spokesman Jean-Christophe Sauterel told Swiss newspaper Matin Dimanche.

An investigation was launched in May 2008, after Interpol raised suspicions about a website based in Switzerland.

The site was officially dedicated to hip hop music, but through a series of secret codes and links allowed access to videos of child pornography.

The designer of the site was not aware what it was being used for, and was cleared of any involvement in the ring, said police.
