Suu Kyi release may herald change in Myanmar: UN envoy
The release of Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi marks the first step towards political change in the southeast Asian country, the United Nations' rights envoy to the country said on Sunday.
"The release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is not only important because of her own destiny, but also because it could symbolise a real start for the improvement of the human rights situation," said Tomas Ojea Quintana, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar.
The release of the Nobel peace laureate also "provides an opportunity for genuine national reconciliation and democratic transition in Myanmar," said Quintana in a statement.
Quintana called on Myanmar's military-ruled government to release all remaining political prisoners.
