Around 3.2 million people have been affected by heavy flooding brought on by torrential monsoon rains in Pakistan, UNICEF said Tuesday, citing government estimates.

"About 3.2 million people have been affected by the floods, 1.4 million of them are children," said Marco Jimenez Rodriguez, spokesman for the UN children's agency.

He explained that it marked a jump from the 2.5 million quoted by the International Committee of the Red Cross on Monday as the earlier figure included only those affected in northwest Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
