A Swiss train collided into another Thursday in the country's north with several people injured and many carriages derailed, police said.

The trains collided near the station in Olten, 45 kilometres (30 miles) southeast of Basel, a police spokesman told AFP.

"Several people were injured," he said, adding that roughly 30 passengers were on board the two trains. A helicopter and several ambulances were sent to the site.

A spokesman for the Swiss railway company CFF described the damage as "relatively substantial."
