The International Committee of the Red Cross said on Tuesday that several hundred people have been killed in inter-ethnic fighting in the central Asian state of Kyrgyzstan.

"According to the team on the ground, several hundred people have been killed in the fighting, although it's still too early to say precisely how many as a number of bodies have already been buried and may not have been identified or counted, while others remain uncollected," the ICRC said in a statement.

A Kyrgyz health ministry toll has put the number of dead at 170.

ICRC spokesman Christian Cardon said at the agency's headquarters in Geneva: "We saw that there were more than that when we visited the morgue at Osh, amongst others."
