A 36-year-old Serbian man died after he was shot in the chest during a fight between a group from the Balkans and some Portuguese from Cape Verde, Swiss local police said Monday.

Another Serbian was injured in the foot while a Cape Verdian is also in hospital after being shot in the chest in the incident which broke out on Sunday evening in western Switzerland's Martigny, police from the canton of Valais said.

"Currently, we have no precise information that could explain the dispute between the two groups of people," said police who described the first group as being made up of "several citizens from ex-Yugoslavia."

"According to first elements of investigations, the groups chanced on each other in the sector of the central plaza.

"They insulted each other, then the situation rapidly degenerated into a fight and finally several shots were fired by the" Serbian who was killed and the Cape Verdian who was injured, said police.

Police said a 9mm pistol with a silencer has been found while the search is still on for a .38 calibre pistol which fits the bullets found by forensic experts.

Early investigations suggest that "at least seven shots were fired," said police, who are appealing for witnesses.
