The Inter-Parliamentary Union on Sunday welcomed the release of Myanmar democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi, but warned that many other opposition politicians remain behind bars.

"While I applaud this news, I am also gravely concerned at the fact that after the recent elections, most political prisoners remain incarcerated," said IPU President Theo-Ben Gurirab

Suu Kyi was released on Saturday shortly after the country's first elections in 20 years, widely condemned in the Western democracies as a farce, cemented the Myanmar junta's rule.

"There are currently 21 members of the parliament elected in 1990 who still remain in jail," said Rosario Green, who chairs the IPU's committee on rights of parliamentarians.

The IPU is a forum for 155 national parliaments and is headquartered in Switzerland.
