A Nigerian man suspected of drug trafficking choked to death in a Swiss prison after swallowing cellophane bags containing narcotics, investigators said Friday.

The 42-year-old man was arrested on Thursday at the border post at Thayngen in the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen, near Germany.

Police later found that he was suffering health problems and he was quickly treated by paramedics, but died a half hour later in a police cell.

Doctors performed an autopsy and found remains of cellophane in his airways, which indicated the man had swallowed bags containing drugs, the Swiss agency ATS quoted investigators as saying.
