TORONTO - Roger Federer continues to top the men's ATP tennis rankings issued Monday but Spain's Rafael Nadal is now within 300 points of the Swiss player after his victory Sunday over Nicolas Kiefer in the final of the Toronto Masters.

Rafael Nadal continued his assault on the elusive world number one spot on Sunday night, beating Germany's Nicolas Kiefer 6-3, 6-2 in the final of the Rogers Cup Masters Series tournament in Toronto. It was the Majorcan's seventh ATP Tour title of the year.

Nadal saw off two of the pretenders to his garland of undisputed heir to Roger Federer, beating Richard Gasquet 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinal and overcoming Andy Murray 7-6, 6-3 in the semi-finals.

Federer's surprise second round exit means that Nadal could mathematically usurp the world number one at next week's Cincinatti Masters Tournament.

Nadal is currently 545 points behind the Swiss - who has occupied the number one position since 2 February 2004 - in the ATP extended rankings.
