Former South Africa president Nelson Mandela is in hospital for a "check-up", current leader Jacob Zuma said on Thursday.

At the start of a panel on climate change at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Zuma said: "President Mandela goes to hospital for check-ups, and I'm sure his check-ups are now more frequent than when he was a healthy young man."

"This is one of those check-ups," said Zuma, who added that he had not spoken to Mandela since he went in to hospital.

The news that the revered 92-year-old Nobel peace prize winner is under medical supervision in hospital for a second day has put South Africa on edge.
