German airline Lufthansa said on Wednesday that passenger traffic was stronger in November than in the same month in 2008.

Frankfurt -- The leading German airline Lufthansa said on Wednesday that passenger traffic was stronger in November than in the same month in 2008, another sign the sector was beginning to see improvement.

The increase of 1.2 percent to 4.43 million passengers came following a rise of 1.1 percent in October.

The passenger load factor, a measure of how full planes fly, decreased however by 0.9 percentage points to 74.8 percent, a statement said, as capacity increased owing to use of larger planes and a reduction in space allotted to business class.

For the entire Lufthansa group, which includes Swiss, Austrian Airlines and BMI, passenger traffic was up by 24.3 percent on the year, mainly due to consolidating the latter two carriers.

Freight traffic improved slightly in November as well, with Lufthansa Cargo posting an increase of 0.5 percent on a 12-month basis owing to stronger demand in Asia, the company said.
