The humanitarian situation in Abidjan has deteriorated to an "absolutely dramatic" degree amid heavy fighting in the economic capital of Ivory Coast, the UN humanitarian office said Tuesday.

"The humanitarian situation has deteriorated again and has become absolutely dramatic in Abidjan where fighting is still continuing," said Elisabeth Byrs, spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

"The majority of hospitals are no longer working, they lack oxygen, public services are no longer working, the ambulances are no longer functioning and when they work, they are being shot at," said Byrs.

"Access to civilian populations is impossible due to security problems," she added.
