French President Nicolas Sarkozy met Wednesday with Swiss counterpart Doris Leuthard, with financial reform at the top of their agenda, the French presidency said.

Switzerland is an "essential partner of the G20 in reform of the global financial system", and was playing an important role in G20 planning, the presidency said.

Leuthard said there was "a major convergence of views on the main topics of the G20", said the same source.

The meeting between the leaders lasted for approximately 45 minutes.

France will assume the year-long G20 presidency in November.
