DRCongo pledges democratic, transparent elections
The upcoming elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo will be held in a democratic and transparent manner, the country's justice minister pledged Tuesday.
"The government is aware of what is at stake and wishes to assure the international community that... everything has been put in place to ensure that the elections take place in absolute democracy and transparency," Luzolo Bambi Lessa told the UN Human Rights Council.
Twelve candidates, including the incumbent president Joseph Kabila, have registered to run for head of state in the mineral-rich African country's November 28 elections.
The minister added that the government will "continue to expand the space of fundamental freedoms and reinforce the arsenal to protect human rights."
