Czech man falls to his death on Swiss Alps

A 47-year-old Czech alpinist fell as he was descending the Dent-Blanche mountain in Valais.

Geneva -- A 47-year-old Czech alpinist fell to his death as he was descending the Dent-Blanche mountain in the western Swiss canton of Valais with a climbing partner, Swiss police said Sunday.

"During the descent, at around 19h00, as they were at a southern ridge at an altitude of 3,700 metres, one of the alpinists fell for an undetermined reason. He died at the site of the accident," said the Swiss Valais cantonal police.

The two alpinists began their climb on Saturday, said police.

"An investigation has been opened by the central Valais examining magistrate's office in order to determine the circumstances of this tragedy," police added.
