Central bankers expect rebound in Japan: ECB chief
European Central Bank chief Jean-Claude Trichet said after a meeting with other leading central bankers on Monday that they expected a significant rebound by the Japanese economy.
Trichet said the damage caused by the huge earthquake and tsunami in the north east was likely to have a more "immediate impact on the Japanese economy."
"We will then after that first period observe a rebounding which we expect to be very significant," he added, after the world's top central bankers were briefed by their Japanese counterpart.
Trichet acts as spokesman for the group, who meet every two months at the Bank for International Settlements to assess world economic trends and the state of financial and monetary markets.
