The first official visit of the new Austrian head is a tradition that symbolises the close ties of the two countries.

VIENNA – Austria's new Chancellor, Werner Faymann, is to travel to Switzerland on Wednesday in his first official visit, his office announced on Monday.

Traditionally, the newly installed Austrian chancellor or president makes his first official trip to neighbouring Switzerland as a signal of the close ties between the two Alpine states.

Faymann is to meet Swiss President and Finance Minister Hans-Rudolf Merz, as well as Economy Minister Doris Leuthard and Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey.

As well as bilateral issues, European matters will be on the agenda, plus the financial crisis and global economic prospects.
