Geneva -- A 28-year-old American has died from injuries sustained during a river rafting accident last week in central Switzerland, police said Monday, bringing the number of fatalities to two.

A 20-year-old Australian woman was pronounced dead in hospital shortly after the accident on Friday.

Both women were hurt during a rafting tour on the river Luetschine, near the town of Interlaken, police in the Swiss canton of Bern said in a statement.

The boat they were on was "pressed against a rock" by the current and eight people on board fell into the river.

While a guide and five other people suffered minor injuries, the two victims had to be resuscitated after they were pulled out of the water by guides on board the four other boats in the tour.

The victims were flown to hospital by helicopter.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident, police said.
