AU chief condemns foreign intervention in Ivory Coast, Libya

African Union chief Teodoro Obiang Nguema condemned foreign military intervention in Ivory Coast and Libya, saying that Africa must be allowed to manage its own affairs.

"Africa does not need any external influence. Africa must manage its own affairs," Obiang Nguema, who is also president of Equatorial Guinea, told an international conference in Geneva.

The AU chairman noted that violence in Ivory Coast has led to significant human losses and that the union pressured strongman Laurent Gbagbo to step down and to recognise Alassane Ouattara as the president of the Ivory Coast.

But this should not "imply a war, an intervention of a foreign army," he said.

He also singled out the UN-sanctioned intervention in Libya.

"I believe that the problems in Libya should be resolved in an internal fashion and not through an intervention that could appear to ressemble an humanitarian intervention. We have already seen this in Iraq," said Obiang Nguema.

Regardless of whether good reasons exist or not for military interventions, all those who choose to live by the sword will eventually perish by the sword. Thomas Jefferson once wrote that he trembled for the United States when he thought of how slavery must be viewed by a just God. I worry for my country now that the U.S. drops bombs to ostensibly help people.

Obiang Nguema is another African leader to watch. Gbagbo has terrorized the same people he wants to rule for months without any effort to save the helpless Ivoriens coming from this little know Obiang Nguema. United Nations is not a foreign army intervention but it is the army of the world, whose military reflects every country in the universe. The world cannot fold its arms and watch the senseless killings of innocent citizens by the likes of Muamar Ghadafi, Laurent Gbagbo and Obiang Nguema. Why would any sensible leader want to extend his rule beyond the end of his term? If the people has gone to vote and has voted the leader out of office then he should get out. Enough of this selfish and greed by the rulers that has subdued African countries for decades. AU couldn't help the poor masses of Ivory Coast hence the intervening United Nations. Thanks UN. Please keep your mouth shut Obiang Nguema.
