BELLINZONA - Three men from Kosovo have gone on trial in Switzerland accused of operating one of Europe's largest heroin wholesale operations.

Prosecutors say the father and his two sons used their base in the southeast European country to import 1.5 metric tons of heroin from Turkey for sale elsewhere.

Swiss privacy rules prevent the men from being named. The 69, 42 and 28-year-old defendants deny all charges.

The trial at the Swiss federal court in Bellinzona opened amid tight security Monday after death threats against an investigating magistrate. Armed police patrolled the courthouse in the southern Swiss canton (state) of Ticino.

They went on trial in Switzerland because the brothers lived and worked there.

A verdict is expected in October.
