Tino Sehgal performs in Zurich Two shows by performance artist Tino Sehgal open 23 April at the Kunsthaus Zürich and Haus Konstruktiv.

Zurich -- Tino Sehgal, born in 1976, creates performance art using museum guards, vocalists, experts and children as actors. His work consists of interactions between museum visitors and the actors placed there.

The Kunsthaus features four separate works by Sehgal throughout the building, alongside the museum’s regular collection. His early dance piece titled ‘Instead of allowing some thing to rise up to your face dancing bruce and dan and other things’ takes place next to sculptures by Auguste Rodin. Sehgal’s piece explores the figures, movement and light in Rodin’s sculptures. Meanwhile, ‘This is exchange’ depends on the interaction of actors and visitors. ‘This is good’, in which gallery staff repeat the title while waving their arms and hopping on one leg, and ‘Diese Beschäftigung’ (This occupation) are also on view.

Despite their non-material nature, Sehgal's creations are still visual art: they are present in a particular space for the entire duration of an exhibition, they can be purchased from a dealer, and they are acquired by museums and private collectors. In their event-like character, Sehgal's pieces test the traditional notion of art.

Sehgal will be on show at the Kunsthaus and at Zurich’s Haus Konstruktiv simultaneously. The exhibitions both open on 23 April 2009.
