This week from Landlockedblues, previews of MV & EE and Beach House, Wolfmother and The Black Angels get reviewed, and a free download from High Places.
MV & EE are an extraordinary phenomenon, and the French region of this small nation must rejoice at their coming. That’s the truth, right there.
Though ostensibly a duo, MV & EE are in fact a rolling collection of artists always centred round the considerable talents of Matt ‘MV’ Valentine and Erika ‘EE’ Elder. They are currently touring a breathtaking record in Barn Nova, possibly the best of their long career, which began a decade ago. The band is a collective of musicians all of whom are based in the Vermont area of New England, and counts among their former collaborators none other than J.Mascis of Dinosaur Jr.
Anyway, what to expect… Barn Nova is a simmering and mysterious concoction of hazy, druggy lo-fi psychedelia, and anyone who enjoyed Brightblack Morning Light when they passed through Switzerland in December should get themselves along to one of these shows, as this is along those lines minus the earnest politicking, and arguably with an even greater grasp of atmosphere. The prospect of experiencing such magical numbers as ‘Drone Trailer’ and ‘Summer Magic’ performed live is enough to confirm MV & EE as the most exciting thing to visit Switzerland so far this year. Anyone who reckons Anthem of the Sun is the best Grateful Dead album will understand this duo.
They say: “I can relate heavily to the family of birds that we feed and interface with regularly. They practically perch on our shoulders on good days and Erika is teaching them to land in her hand. Both she and I can tell much about forthcoming daily events by their morning song.” – Matt Valentine
We say: Mixing Eastern influences with both British and American traditional folk, this is one for true connoisseurs. LandLockedBlues is therefore distraught MV & EE won’t be making it to Zurich.
