Kaki KingThere are those who regard Kaki King as the finest guitarist of her generation, and with good reason. The self-taught 30-year-old from Atlanta, Georgia, is nothing short of a phenomenon, especially live. These two Switzerland dates form part of her biggest European tour yet, as she traverses the continent for five weeks in support of new album Junior, out this spring on Cooking Vinyl.

In 2006 Rolling Stone magazine named King as one of their ‘Guitar Gods’, the first female to be accorded such an honour. If that accolade suggests she is in the mould of those infuriating guitarists who noodle and fretwank their way through meaningless (and long) musical careers, don’t be fooled. King is a true innovator. Her ability to combine her stunning dexterity and downright skill on her fretboard with an innate understanding of effects makes her truly original, and when she starts fret-tapping, a heinous sin in the hands of many, it only elevates her artistry. Only fellow guitar queen Marnie Stern can match her.

Junior is King’s fifth full album, but it wasn’t really until 2008’s Dreaming of Revenge that her cult following mobilised itself and she became a worldwide name. King was also nominated for a Golden Globe (stop scoffing at the back) for her score to Sean Penn’s film Into the Wild.

She says: “I like Australian rules football. It’s basically like an incredibly violent form of rugby. It’s actually a form of rugby but far more intense. I also read a lot. I am learning German.” – Kaki King on her hobbies.

We say: These are, in all honesty, shows not to be missed. A Kaki King gig will put you in a daze.

More on Landlockedblues this week:
Shout Out Louds: “A band who rather than reaching a peak of their career with their new album, have merely descended their previous one and risen to a different sort of peak. Or something that makes sense.”
James Yorkston: “Wholesome, wordy and witty quasi-folk music that offers a great deal of food for thought. Artists like this aren’t a regular thing in Switzerland, so go to, dears.”

LandLockedBlues is a preview-led guide to live music in Switzerland. Contrary to appearances, there is life in Switzerland, so much so that we decided to set up a site to show exactly what mysterious and enchanting pleasures pass through this strange land. No genre of music misses out: if it ‘hits the sweet spot’ we preview it, and possibly even review it.
