The economic recession has led to a collapse in demand for recycled building materials, glass and metal.
Sorted waste is good for the environment. But what about making money out of it?
The prospects can best be described as unpredictable.
Business looks brisk at Utrecht's brand new waste-processing plant, which opened its gates only two weeks ago.
Vehicles of all shapes and sizes roll up: family cars packed with old toys and worn out cushions, pick-up trucks with old sofas and mattresses sticking out of the back, a trailer full of twigs and branches.
In line with the latest environmental standards, a huge container has been fitted under the asphalt to catch any leaking liquids.
The upgrade cost 1.5 million euros.
