What’s on: International Museum Day Switzerland’s museums take visitors around the world on Sunday, 17 May.

International Museum Day

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) celebrates the 32nd edition of International Museum Day on Sunday, 17 May. This year’s motto, "Every museum is a new world", reflects an interest in developing new relationships between visitors and local communities.

Museums around the world will host contests, workshops, conferences, performances, stay open late and lead new tours between museums and local sights. Inspired by World Heritage tours and high-end museum travel, the aim is to encourage understanding. “For visitors, tourists and locals along with curators and volunteers, International Museum Day can become a bonding experience,” says Alissandra Cummins, President of the International Council of Museums (ICOM).

Swiss museums

In Switzerland over 200 hundred museums will host special exhibitions and activities on 17 May.

Participating museums offer diverse programs. The International Museum of the Red Cross organises a historic tour through Geneva in three languages, while La Grange in Môtiers presents a tour through Australia with aboriginal artists and Australian wines.

For children, the Swiss National Museum offers a performance with Chinese puppets. And at Kusnacht Museum, an artist and traveler displays his unique collection of… bags of vomit.

In certain regions, including Jura and Valais, Museum Day takes place after the European Night of Museums, a European-wide event in which museums remain open late on Saturday night, 16 May.Photo © Gaetan Lee
