French missing post-tsunami drops to 50 17/01/2005 00:00

PARIS, Jan 17 (AFP) - The number of French nationals unaccounted for since the Asian tsunami disaster has been cut in half, from 100 to about 50, Foreign Minister Michel Barnier said Monday.

"At the present time, we are still without news from about 50 of our fellow citizens," Barnier told reporters after talks with his Italian counterpart Gianfranco Fini. "The figure has been revised down."

Barnier said the number of dead and presumed dead had not changed: 22 French nationals are confirmed dead in the December 26 disaster, and 74 are missing and presumed dead.

The foreign minister explained the drop in the number of those unaccounted for as the result of careful cross-checking carried out by French authorities.

More than 168,000 people were killed in the devastating Indian Ocean tsunamis, which were triggered by a massive under-sea earthquake.
