Violent fans at the European Championship risk will be flown directly home after matches.

13 February 2008

BERN - Violent fans at the European Championship risk being flown directly home after matches.

The Swiss government amended a decree against night flights Wednesday to allow exceptional takeoffs for security reasons.

''The first time this new regulation could be used is at the European soccer championship this June,'' the Federal Office of Civil Aviation said. ''Potentially dangerous fan groups can be forced to fly to their home countries directly after a soccer game.''

The previous rules prevented flights between 10pm and 6am, with exceptions only for emergency landings, military machines, government-owned planes and rescue, aid and police services.

Euro 2008 will be co-hosted by Austria and Switzerland from June 7-29.
