Bellinzona - A Ukrainian woman and her five children were rescued from the mountains in Ticino in the south of Switzerland Sunday where they were found wandering lightly dressed and some of them barefoot.
The 47-year-old woman and the children aged 9 to 21 were described as refugees and were airlifted to hospital in Lugano where three children were treated for frostbite.
They were only discovered thanks to the radio they were carrying which they used to send distress signals in English that were picked up by amateur radio users in Italy and Switzerland.
It was several hours before they were traced to a location at Mont Lema, close to the Italian border, according to a spokesman from Rega, the Swiss air mountain service.
