Flemish minister-president Kris Peeters CD&V and his Catalonian colleague Artur Mas are planning a joint trade mission in January next year. The two will only announce the destination of their trip in April, but evidently it will probably be a country outside Europe “where both Flanders and Catalonia are already represented and where the joint input of the two regions create a surplus value”. According to Peeters, the two regions are keen to present themselves together, as they are both considered to be the “economic drivers of their country”. In autum the two regions will also host a conference on logistics, “a sector in which they both excell”. Catalonia is not the first partner Peeters has chosen for joint foreign initiatives. From 6 to 10 July this year the Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte will accompany him on a trade mission to South Africa. Peeters’ proactive foreign policy is not too well accepted by federal foreign affairs minister Didier Reynders MR, who feels the minister-president should stick to forging economic contacts and leave the political contacts and visits to the federal level, but according to Peeters, the regions also have political powers.
