09 February 2007

Rolling tobacco sales increased by 12 percent between 2005 and 2006 or by 40 percent since 1995, reaching a total quantity of 9,168 tones sold.

Overall cigarette consumption remains fairly stable at 13,386 billion cigarettes sold, a figure comparable to that of 2005.

It's the growing popularity of rolling tobacco that led to a 4 percent increase in yearly tax revenues generated from the sale of tobacco products in one year and a 75 percent increase since 1995.

According to CRIOC, a consumer behaviour research centre, men smoke more then women (28 percent compared to 15 percent), and Walloons smoke more than Flemish people (28 percent compared to 17 percent).

Nationwide, Belgians aged 15 to 29 smoke the most, 25 percent, followed by the 30 to 39 year-olds, 24 percent.
