02/12/2011Ghent to receive international primary school for expat children

As from 1 September 2012 the toddlers and primary-school children of foreign employees working for East and West Flemish companies will be able to attend their classes in English in Ghent. Car manufacturer Volvo Cars, the Flemish Institute for Biotechnology, visual display specialist Barco and the University of Ghent signed the memorandum of foundation for an International School. This has been confirmed by the Ghent alderman for innovation, Sofie Bracke Open VLD. This breakthrough will enable companies in East and West Flanders to accelerate the recruitment of international talent, as they will no longer be held back by  the absence of  an international school. A suitable location is currently sought for the school, which also enjoys the support of both the province of West and East Flanders and the cities of Ghent and Kortrijk. The initiators hope to accommodate 30 to 40 children during the first year. A viability study estimates the potential number of pupils between 80 and 120. The fact that businesses are the driving force behind this initiative highlights the need  for an international primary school in the region, Bracke believes.
