BSB student wins prestigious Art Award

The award includes a EUR 300 cash prize and a two-week internship at the Pomilio Blumm Ideas Company, a communications agency in Italy.

Alice’s work, entitled ‘Curiosity’ was exhibited in Pescara, Italy where she was presented with the award. Her submitted work was on the theme of ‘the concept of rhinoceros’.

“Alice has had a very exciting couple of days including being interviewed by Rai Television and La Stampa,” her mother, Alessandra Poggio, said.

On the subject of the theme, ‘the concept of rhinoceros’, Alice wrote: "For decades we have exploited and wrung out every last drop out of our environment just like one would do with a piece of wet cloth, disregarding or ignoring the other inhabitants of this earth that we most certainly have had a severe impact on. The rhinoceros is no exception. Its beginnings trace back to prehistory, and it has been able to survive the most unthinkable environmental phenomena. Now its fragile future lies in our clumsy hands and its fall into extinction is not only a saddening possibility, but an imminent certainty."

"In my installation I try to create an optical illusion using mirrors in order to remind people of what they are unconsciously creating. The rhinoceros sculpted out of white plasticine, placed in the middle of the mirrors, highlights the fragility and innocence of this fascinating creature."
