01/10/20091,500 Belgian soldiers to profit from early departure in 2010

The Defence minister, Pieter De Crem, has decided to authorise an offer of early pensions for 1,500 military employees in order to reduce personnel costs in the department.

“One thousand five hundred servicemen and women in 2010 could benefit from a voluntary payment suspension or an SVP,” said a spokesperson for the Belga news agency.

765 possibilities for early departure from service have been opened to volunteers (soldiers and corporals), 690 for non-commissioned officers, 20 for subordinate officers and 25 for field officers. 

“There is an enormous demand for early departure,” said the spokesperson to explain the increase in the number of open places, as originally only 500 departures had been envisaged. The date to request departure has also been pushed to 31 October instead of 2 October. 

This year, 1,150 service personnel asked for an SVP, although only 750 places had been expected.
