Higher than acceptable levels of melamine found in Belgium in White Rabbit sweets that had been imported from China.

2 October 2008

BELGIUM -- Tests carried out by the Federal Food Safety Agency (FFSA) have revealed higher than acceptable levels of melamine in sweets that had been imported from China.

Annalists found melamine concentrations of 11 mg per kg in the Chinese White Rabbit sweets. The legal safety limit for melamine is 2.5 mg per kg.

The FFSA says that production of the sweets has already been stopped.

People that have bought sweets made by White Rabbit are being told not to eat them.

The sweets in question all have a sell-by date of 20/01/10 and were by Guanshengyuan Food, General Factory in Shanghai, China.

Melamine is the same chemical that was added to Chinese baby milk resulting in the death of four infants.

A further 53,000 Chinese babies became ill after drinking the contaminated milk.

Here in Belgium the Federal Food Safety Agency is continuing its checks on Chinese imports.

Anyone with questions about this or other food safety issues can contact the agency on 0800/13.550.
