Gonzalo strips national pride from the Atomium

The remnants of the hurricane didn’t do too much damage, but one of its victims was the Belgian tricolour at the top of the Atomium.

For a short while the Brussels landmark displayed a tricolour with only two colours: the Flemish ones, black and gold.

The red that together with gold features in the flag of Wallonia was ripped off by the outrageous storm.

In parliamentary quarters there were fears that Vlaams Belang lawmaker Filip De winter had scaled the icon in person and had inflicted an embarrassing wound to our national pride, but Gonzalo, the true culprit, was soon identified.

On Tuesday it was simply too stormy to run up a new flag, but by Wednesday morning the matter had been sorted.
