BRUSSELS – In the most recent issue of its magazine gay and lesbian federation ZiZo is raising the alarm on the shortage of sperm donors. The organisation is calling on gay men to donate sperm to counter the shortage.

The recent "law on medically assisted reproduction" stipulates that a single donor's sperm may only be used to impregnate six different women. Embryologist Ingrid De Pauw and Dr Ingrid Inion (University Hospital Middelheim) say that the new regulation will result in a shortage of donors for artificial insemination in the foreseeable future.

They are calling on gay men to donate sperm. Ingrid Inion: "We are calling on gay men because they cannot have children on their own and are therefore more likely to donate."

ZiZo reports that the University Hospital Gasthuisberg in Leuven still refuses to inseminate lesbians.
