BRUSSELS — The 18-year-old man arrested with a hunting rifle in Kortrijk on Tuesday evening has been released from remand detention under strict conditions.
An investigating judge has ordered the youth to undergo psychiatric care, while a judicial official was appointed to supervise him.
The Brugge public prosecution had earlier indicated it would not request the suspect be remanded in detention.
It said the incident was simply a matter of relationship problems and that the involved people primarily needed support and counselling.
The man was arrested without struggle in Kortrijk carrying a loaded hunting rifle on a grass field near the home of his former girlfriend.
Mobile phone text messages indicated he planned to commit suicide because he could not come to terms with the fact his girlfriend had ended their relationship.
The young man must still appear before an investigating judge, who will decide whether he should be charged with illegal weapon use. A hunting rifle may not be carried on the street.
