BRUSSELS – The morning shift at car manufacturer Opel Antwerp started work on Thursday morning at 6 am. Trade unions and management have confirmed this.

The strike, which started on Tuesday afternoon after news that the Antwerp plant would be facing considerable job losses, continued into the afternoon on Wednesday, despite announcements that it would be ended at 2 pm.

The night shift continued the strike, which ended at about midnight. Production proceeded as usual after midnight.

The commotion among the night shift was led by a small group of workers with temporary contracts who fear they could be the first to go if the announced job cuts go ahead.
