Winter Wonders opens for 2008
The mayor of Brussels Freddy Thielemans ceremoniously opened the annual Christmas market.1 December 2008
'Winter Wonders' is made up of 240 wooden chalets, dotted around the city centre.
Apart from the 240 wooden chalets spread out over a route of a couple of kilometres, there is also an impressive sound and light show on the Market Square.
A huge ferris wheel rises above the skyline and there is an ice skating rink. Various cultural activities are also on offer.
New this year are the artists at work on ice sculptures and a bigger skating rink - big enough for 300 people. For the children there is a second 'junior skating rink'.
Last year 2.5 million people, including many foreigners, visited the largest Christmas market in Belgium.
The Brussels Christmas market is hailed by British tour operators as 'Europe's most original Christmas market' (see the Winter Wonders website)
The market is open from 28 November 2008 to 28 December 2008. From Monday to Thursday 12.00 to 21.00, Friday to Sunday 11.00 to 22.00.
**PLEASE NOTE: 24 December from 12.00 to 18.00, 25 December 14.00 to 22.00.
The Brussels authorities are urging visitors to the Christmas market to take public transportation.
