Weekend accidents down by a fifth
The number of road accidents that happen on weekend nights in Antwerp Province is was 20% lower during the first 9 months of this year than it was during the same period last year.
There has also been a small fall in the number of driver being caught drunk driving and/or speeding.
The Governor of Antwerp Province Cathy Berx released the figures ahead of an night of wide ranging checks carried on drivers across the province.
Ms Berx says that the message remains that checks will be carried out in Antwerp Province each and every weekend. This means that there is a big chance that you will be caught if you drive under the influence of drink or drugs or break the speed limit.
Despite the fall in the number of accidents the number of fatalities was up on the same period last year. However, this was due to an accident involving a bus on the E19 in Ranst in which 5 people died.
